1 in 10 women in the US have endometriosis a chronic inflammatory condition that causes endometrial-like tissue to grow outside the uterus. It can also spread to organs like the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic cavity, and in rare cases even the lungs and brain. Endometriosis occurs when abnormal tissue acts like normal endometrial tissue, breaking down during a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle however the body is unable to dispose of it. This leads to irritation, inflammation, severe pelvic pain and long-term bloating among other depressing and debilitating symptoms that can impact your health, mood, self-esteem and personal style. Comfort, practicality and flexibility are the keys to dressing with endometriosis.

2. Layer Up for Warmth and Bloating

Pelvic pain caused by endometriosis can be soothed by warmth (hot water bottles are a must) so layer up by wearing leggings under pants or thermal tops. Endometriosis also causes temperature sensitivity, one minute you’re cold and have chills and the next moment you have hot flashes and feel like your skin is on fire. Wear lightweight, easy-to-be-removed layers to regulate your temperature and help manage and disguise abdominal swelling which fluctuates rapidly throughout the day.

3. Floaty Maxi Dresses are a Godsend

Breezy floaty maxi dresses, maxi skirts, and large oversized shirts are effortless, comfortable and offer full coverage making them the perfect choice when you’re experiencing pelvic pain and bloating or having a bad day. Always avoid tight restrictive as it can can aggravate symptoms.

In addition to loose clothing, soft, stretchy fabrics and pieces like comfortable athleisure wear can make a difference when living with chronic pain. Look to chic matching sets and sweats in organic fabrics and wider-leg pants to allow for easy movement.

5. Natural Breathable Fabrics are Best

Fabrics also matter so choose pieces made from natural or organic fibers like cotton and linen as they breathe better and are more comfortable. Natural fabrics also help manage skin sensitivities, temperature fluctuations and sweating caused by endometriosis symptoms.

6. Elastic and Adjustable Waistbands Bring Relief

Tight clothing especially stiff waistbands can exacerbate abdominal pain, so choose elastic and adjustable waistbands.  Dresses, skirts, and pants with adjustable features like drawstrings or wrap styles offer comfort, flexibility, and a customizable fit for days when symptoms flare up.

7. Avoid High-Waisted Looks

It’s not just the type of waistband but the height that matters. High-waisted pants, jeans and skirts will press against the abdomen and cause unnecessary discomfort and pain.  Mid or low-rise bottoms, again with adjustable or elastic waistbands, are your best bet.

8. Choose Comfort with Easy Access

Those living with endometriosis will testify that regular trips to the bathroom are common due to bladder pain and urinary issues. Clothes that are easy to take on and off are essential so steer clear of jumpsuits, rompers, and anything with complicated closures.

9. Embrace Black and Dark Shades

Fashion-wise black is chic, timeless, and slimming. Endometroisis-wise black and dark clothing are a safer option as heavy menstrual bleeding is another symptom of endometriosis.

Underwire bras and anything with padding, compression, or sculpting can be painful for those experiencing tender abdomens and ribs. Fill your lingerie drawer with comfy underwire bras or bralettes in soft, breathable natural fabrics like cotton for support without added pressure.

Wearing high heels can exacerbate back and pelvic pain associated with endometriosis so create a shoe wardrobe filled with stylish flats. Classic loafers, sneakers, mid-stack heels, and ballet flats (provided they have good cushioning)  can minimize strain and discomfort. Shoes that are easy to slip on and off will also help facilitate quick changes.
